Just what is a tapestry?
The simplest explanation is that a tapestry is the result of two kinds of threads intersecting. A little more technical explanation would be that warp threads are stretched on the loom, coming from the roller, in a lengthwise fashion (called warping). The colored weft threads are then introduced, crossing the warp threads with the help of a shuttle (weaving).
The Techniques of Manufacture
There are two techniques used in the manufacture of the tapestries: the "Haute-lisse" and the "Basse-lisse". While accomplishing the same end result, these two techniques are completely different and are nearly impossible to differentiate in the end product. The Haute-Lisse loom is composed of two pillars supporting two mobile cylinders (rollers), the first one placed in the higher position while the other roller is situated in the lower position. Weaving is thus made vertically. With the Basse-Lisse loom, the warp is stretched on a horizontal plan, thus weaving is made horizontally.
When the weaving process is complete and all finishing is applied, you end up with a beautiful and elegant work that will add warmth and a certain kind of softness to any room's decor.
